If dating apps weren’t already like boisterous waters, try dating apps as a Christian.
In the times of advanced technology and covid-19, dating apps have become more prevalent. Whether you’re on Hinge, Christian Mingle or it’s going down in your DMs, learning how to navigate dating online is the new thing. But if you’re still coming around to the idea of online dating you’ve landed in the right spot.
Dating Apps As A Christian
Before anyone throws themself into the world of dating and dating apps, it is important to know what you want. At the very least, create a list of non-negotiables. It is important to go into dating with full clarity of what you want because it leaves less room for confusion from others. At the end of the day, you will be dating this person. Not your friends, family or the church. And if you’re constantly looking for what the church says is your perfect match, there is a chance you will end up in an unhappy and/or unhealthy relationship.
Tips For Success
Make your faith and the importance of it known.
Make your dating goals clear. As Christians, the ultimate goal should be marriage/ life partner. Don’t leave room for confusion or misinterpretation.
Keep it cute and classy. No thirst traps or anything too revealing.
Be honest & upfront with yourself and others. It’s easy to fall into the trap of putting on a mask when dating and meeting new people. Stay true to your authentic self.
Keep it to a maximum of 2-3 potentials at a time. Although it’s an ego boost to have your DMs popping, it’s overwhelming and it’s harder to form genuine connections when you’re constantly having to reply and remember vital information about several people. Keep in mind that you are still having to stand firm in your life outside of dating, so you are also still connecting with friends and family as well. Don’t overwhelm yourself.
Keep the conversation light, airy and fun. You don’t need to go into interrogation mode to have your questions answered. Learn how to make them flow into normal conversation. No one wants to feel like they’re in an interrogation room or like they’re being psychoanalyzed.
No pressure. Dating should be fun, not stressful. We often put too much pressure on it because we are rushing. God’s will and timing are always and will remain God’s will and timing. So you’re either going to learn to wait well for who He has for you or you’re going to wait and be miserable. But either way, you’re still going to wait.
Vetting
The vetting process in dating is so important because it gives you the opportunity to see if you’re really compatible with someone. It’s impossible to learn every single thing about a person when you’re dating them, but asking the right questions in the vetting process will give you a better sense of who they are. Not to mention, dating apps as a Christian or just in general can be breeding grounds for imposters and catfish. You want to ask a mix of general questions and follow up questions to gain more clarity.
For example, don’t just ask if they have a relationship with God. Follow up with asking how they cultivate their relationship with God.
- Are you a believer in Jesus Christ?
- Are you reading any devotionals? How do you apply them to your life?
- Typically, what kind of time do you carve out for your relationship with God?
- What are your typical weekends like?
- How’s your relationship with your family?
All of these are great examples that give an in depth look at their relationship with God. But also what type of person they are and the company they keep. Because it is possible to be unequally yoked in more ways than just religion. Someone may be a party animal, while the other person is an introverted homebody. All of these are just a small portion of things you should want to know. Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions, no matter how awkward they may feel!
Of course I can’t leave you hanging. Here’s a list of questions to ask during the vetting process!
